About the 34th Street Improvement Project

The 34th Street Utility and Roadway Improvement Project boundary stretches along 34th Street from Harlem Avenue to Ridgeland/Ogden avenues. This project focuses on the needed utility and roadway improvements along the corridor and will include:
  • Roadway rehabilitation and reconstruction
  • Watermain repairs
  • Sewer repairs and replacement
  • Streetscape landscape design
  • ADA compliance in all areas
  • Rain gardens
  • Bump outs
  • Flashing beacons at Home Avenue to protect children crossing the street for school
  • Bike route enhancements
  • Permeable paver parking lanes
  • Crosswalk and sidewalk improvements
These improvements will help address traffic congestion, commuter needs and reduce vehicle dependency.

Project Goals

The primary goal of the project is to:
  • Update and enhance sewer lines within the right-of-way
  • Reconstruct and rehabilitate, as necessary, all roadway areas
  • Repair watermain
  • Ensure all areas along the street comply with ADA standards
  • Increase safety for school children/residents crossing the street at Home Avenue with pedestrian-activated flashing beacons
  • Respect the historical area of 34th Street

Project Benefits

Once constructed, the project will provide:
  • Over 3,000 feet of repaired or replaced sewer lines to decrease recurring basement sewer backups
  • Over 5,200 feet of repaired watermain including lead service line replacement
  • Over 4,300 feet of reconstructed roadway
  • Freshly landscaped corridor including over a dozen rain gardens
  • Improved drainage
  • Safer crossings for school children/residents at Home Avenue and East Avenue and 34th Street
  • Construct over 1,200 feet of permeable paver parking lanes
  • Improved pedestrian and bicyclists’ safety
