Overview of Improvements

The main purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the roadway, sidewalk and curb and gutter. The addition of pedestrian enhancements, traffic safety measures, permeable pavers and rain gardens will help make this street a more walkable and environmentally-friendly area. Curb cut-outs at intersections will also make it easier to cross the street and decorative landscaping and planters will enhance the street features. Below the surface, existing drainage plans will be evaluated for potential drainage issues. Appropriate outlet treatments and stormwater best management practices will be incorporated as part of the project.

34th Street has experienced flooding issues that have impacted residential and commercial properties.

Funding

The project is being funded through a variety of avenues. The Surface Transportation Program, Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act Fund, Congressional Grant Request through Congressman Garcia, grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and local matching funds have all contributed to various phases of this project.
